BOSIET Expiry Period: When Offshore Personnel Need FOET

BOSIET Expiry Period: When Offshore Personnel Need FOET

Your BOSIET certificate may be filed away with the date you first completed offshore safety training. The date you need to watch, however, is when your next refresher must be completed.

For personnel working under OPITO requirements, the BOSIET expiry period is a practical four-year deadline. Missing it can affect which course you are eligible to take and whether your training record meets the requirements for an upcoming offshore assignment.

Does BOSIET Expire After Four Years?

OPITO states that the maximum interval between completing BOSIET and subsequently completing FOET is four years. FOET, or Further Offshore Emergency Training, also has a four-year validity period.

BOSIET stands for Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training. It is the initial course. FOET is the refresher used to maintain the relevant offshore emergency training. Your original BOSIET remains part of your training history, but holding an old BOSIET certificate alone does not mean your training is current for the next mobilization.

OPITO’s BOSIET with CA-EBS standard sets out the four-year interval. Its FOET with CA-EBS standard states the refresher’s four-year validity and its entry requirements.

Check the actual expiry date and course type recorded for your certificate. If your employer, operator, or project has additional requirements, confirm those before booking training or travel.

Check Which Offshore Training You Hold

Similar course names can refer to different training products. BOSIET, TBOSIET, FOET, TFOET, and courses involving EBS or CA-EBS should not be treated as interchangeable simply because they all relate to offshore safety.

The breathing equipment covered by the course can matter for helicopter travel and the assignment’s training matrix. Your employer may also require other training or a specific combination of certificates.

Before booking a refresher, check:

  • The exact course title and code on your current certificate
  • Whether it covers EBS or CA-EBS, where applicable
  • The completion and expiry dates recorded for that training
  • The course required by your next employer or project
  • The entry requirements of the OPITO-approved training centre

Do not choose a course based only on the word “FOET” in its title. Send the training centre your existing certificate and explain where you expect to work so it can check the appropriate route.

Keep the Certificate Details Accurate

A certificate that is current can still cause a delay if its details are wrong or the copy you send is unreadable. When training is completed, check the name, course title, certificate or learner number, training centre, and relevant dates against the issued record.

Save a complete, legible copy. Include the reverse side if it contains information needed to identify or verify the certificate. Keep your initial BOSIET and later FOET records clearly labeled so the latest valid training is easy to find without losing your earlier history.

If a date is missing or unclear, ask the approved training centre to confirm your record. A date calculated in a personal tracker is useful for planning, but the issued training record and applicable requirements should guide your booking and mobilization decisions.

Book the Refresher Before the Deadline

FOET is a practical course that may require travel, an available place at an approved centre, and medical screening or other entry documentation. Waiting until the final weeks of a four-year period leaves little room to resolve a booking or paperwork problem.

Review your training record several months before its expiry. Compare the date with your rotation, expected leave, and any upcoming mobilization. Then confirm the correct course with your employer or training centre and book a suitable place while your prerequisite certificate is still valid.

If you renew before expiry, check the new certificate’s dates when it is issued. OPITO’s standards include a rule concerning renewal within the final three months of the previous certificate’s validity, subject to the duty holder, asset owner, or operator. Do not assume the new expiry date without checking the certificate you receive.

An early reminder should lead to an action: verify the required course, check available dates, and complete training before your current record lapses.

What If Your BOSIET or FOET Has Already Lapsed?

Do not assume you can simply book FOET after the deadline. OPITO’s FOET with CA-EBS standard lists a valid, in-date qualifying BOSIET or FOET certificate among its entry requirements.

Contact an OPITO-approved training centre and give it the exact course title and date of your last certificate. Tell your employer or crewing team that your training has lapsed and ask which course will satisfy the assignment. They can confirm the appropriate route before you pay for a course or make travel plans.

A booking confirmation is not the same as completed, valid training. If mobilization is close, establish what the employer will accept before treating yourself as ready to travel.

Keep Your Offshore Record Ready to Check

Store your current BOSIET or FOET certificate with other documents relevant to your assignment, such as your medical, identification, and any additional safety training. Make the current version obvious and check that you can open it on your device without a connection.

Offline access helps you inspect a certificate while travelling or offshore. Sending a copy still requires a connection or another method accepted by the recipient. Keep originals and follow any verification process required by the employer or operator.

Wave – The Seafarers’ Digital Wallet helps you organize certificate copies, monitor recorded expiry dates, and find your professional records in an offline-first app. Download Wave on iOS or Android.

The useful question is not only “Have I completed BOSIET?” It is “Which offshore safety training do I currently hold, when does it expire, and does it meet the requirements of my next assignment?” Check those three points well before the four-year deadline.
